How to handle nicotine pouch cravings

Updated .

On this page

Cravings are easier to handle when you have already decided what to do. Pick two or three actions for the moments you usually reach for a pouch, write them down and keep them close.

Choose your actions

Smokefree.gov suggests changing what you are doing, taking a walk, breathing slowly, keeping your mouth busy with sugar-free gum, and messaging someone. The advice was written for smoking; the actions work the same. Smokefree: managing cravings.

Pick ones that fit your day. A walk suits a break, not a meeting. A message to a friend suits an evening, not a drive. Never log or read a worksheet while driving.

One line per situation

WhenI willAfterwards I note
Finishing lunchLeave the table and walk for five minutes.Whether changing the routine helped.
A stressful break at workTwo minutes of slow breathing, or a message to a friend. What set it off, without judging the whole day.
Reaching for the can on autopilotRead the reason I wrote down for quitting.Whether I noticed before or after.

Specific notes help: "after lunch, back at my desk, reached for the can" tells you more than "bad day". The seven-day worksheet has room for them next to the counts.

If you use a pouch

Log it. Then look at what happened just before, what was missing and what you want to do next time. If you forgot your gum on a long shift, put a pack with your work things. A slip is a data point, not the end of the plan, and an honest record beats a perfect streak.

Ask for the right kind of help

Tell people what would help instead of asking them to police you: a message at a certain time, company on a walk, or listening while you go over the day. Smokefree's advice for supporters is encouragement, not criticism. Smokefree: supporting someone who is quitting.

If cravings or symptoms are hard to manage, talk to a healthcare professional. How to quit ZYN lists quitlines and treatment options, and the withdrawal guide covers what the first weeks usually look like.
